Parrotfish in lagoon creating sand
Parrotfish spend their days chomping down on coral. They eat live coral and poop out the hard calcium carbonate skeleton of the coral, which washes ashore and makes our beaches. In a year, one large parrotfish can produce 1,000 pounds (450 kg) of sand.
The coral reef is a very fragile part of the ocean, and many creatures are needed to help keep it healthy and in balance. Large schools of surgeonfish and parrotfish are needed to maintain this balance.
