Nazca Masked Booby mom and chick with Clipperton Crabs

Clipperton Island, aka Île de la Passion, a French territory in the most remote part of the Pacific Ocean. The only coral island in the eastern Pacific Ocean with a completely enclosed lagoon. Even this distant, uninhabited outpost shows clear evidence of overfishing and a staggering plastic debris problem. Marine wildlife such as seabirds, whales, fish and turtles mistake plastic waste for prey, most then die of starvation as their stomachs become filled with plastic.

The island is home to the Clipperton Crab, a bright orange species of land crab, about 5 cm, which are numerous and scurry ceaselessly over the rocky shores looking for food.

Clipperton has been identified as an important bird nesting ground with a the large breeding colony of Masked and Brown Boobies.
